Our Picks - Best Bets For The Week
Band In A Box - An occasional profile on an up-and-coming musical act in the South Bay

Peach

Peach has had the blues for a long time.

In her student days as a voice major at the University of Denver in the early 1970s, the native of Anderson, Ind., was accompanied by current Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on piano, who later set aside her musical career for politics.

Peach went on to become a professional musician, playing as a solo act and with a variety of musicians before following her true calling as a blues guitarist and vocalist.

Her 2005 album, "The Real Thing" (Blues Rock Records), featured a host of respected player, including blues legend Taj Mahal, former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Rick Vito and keyboardist Garth Hudson of The Band. Her current live band includes keyboardist Ken Stange, bassist Eric T. Ward and drummer Tom Walsh.

Winner of the blues artist of the year award at the 2006 South Bay Music Awards, Peach also is a nominee in the best blues artist category at the All Access Magazine Music Awards to be held Saturday night at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood.

Every Wednesday night in November, Peach and her band will preside over the South Bay Blues Jam, from 8 to 11 p.m. at Runaway Bay, 4525 Calle Mayor, Torrance, 310-378-2777. There is no cover charge, and all musicians are welcome (drummers by invitation only).

No doubt she'll keep a spot at the piano open for Condi.
